All About Gin:

Gin – a Dutch creation which the English made popular worldwide!

The countries which consume the most gin in the world are Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands & the U.K. Gin is the primary ingredient in the classical martini and it is absolutely integral to the iconic gin & tonic. However, when gin is around, one cannot help but recall that gin craze which swept England, when it was allowed to be produced without a license. Drunkenness among the proletariat was so common that the government was forced to impose heavy taxes to decreases availability.

HOW IS GIN MADE?

A light-bodied distilled spirit made from a mash of cereal grains and flavored with botanicals during its distillation, gin is noted for its characteristic pine flavor due to its primary ingredient – juniper berries. Producers cannot qualify their gin by age and only the genever is barrel aged. Consequently, most gin is clear, except when it acquires a tinge of golden due to the flavors added to it.

Also, every distiller of gin uses its own botanical recipe, comprised of various herbs, spices, fruits & flowers. Commonly used botanicals are almond, angelica, anise, cassia, coriander, fennel, and citrus peels. Some gin recipes use just a handful of different botanicals while others use 30 or more resulting in typically high-proof, light bodied & clean gin. Moreover, some brands keep their gin recipe a well-guarded secret.

TYPES OF GIN

When one talks of gin, the London dry gin is the default definition that comes to the mind, however, there are many other styles. Some of them are as mentioned:

  • London Dry Gin: Gin that can be made anywhere, keeping the primary flavor to be juniper. It is very dry gin.
  • Modern Gin:Here, other botanicals such as citrus, coriander, rose, cucumber or lavender overpower thepresence of juniper.
  • Plymouth Gin: must be made in Plymouth, England. Slightly sweeter than London Dry Gin with an earthy character.
  • Barrel-Aged Gin (Genever or Schiedam Gin): Unlike other gins, aged in oak barrels, giving it a malty spirit that allows it to be drank neat.

HOW TO DRINK GIN

Gin forms the base for a diverse range of cocktails, be it the classic gin martini, gimlet, gin & tonic, Negroni, Singapore Slings or Tom Collins. Originally, gin was rarely served neat; it usually was the go-to spirit for cocktails.

The Dutch still prefer to drink genever straight, often using glasses specifically designed for it. Most common gin cocktails include tall soda mixed drinks with citrus wedge, and short martinis – both in bars and at home.

Gin martinis are often best served stirred, unless mixed with heavy flavors of fruit juice, cream or egg.
